Holy Family Academy Reunion, Las Vegas

Some events in life are unforgettable and memorable.

On June 24-26, 2011, 18 girls met for a high school class reunion in Las Vegas.
We were from Holy Family Academy in Baguio City, Philippines, HFA Batch 1976.

Memorable because:
---We came from a private, all-girl Catholic high school in the Philippines. A boarding school.
---There were only about 80 of us in our entire graduating class.
   We were divided into two classrooms (4A & 4B, approximately 40 in each class)
---We didn't rotate classrooms for different subjects.
   Our teachers rotated into our classrooms for different subjects.
   So many students remained with the same classmates, for 4 years
   (Holy Family Loyalists were together from Kindergarten through graduation ... 6 were with us).
---I remember being taught by french-speaking nuns from Belgium, who lived on school premises
---Holy Family Academy is no longer in existence (renamed to St. Louis School Center)
   It is still owned and administered by the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (ICM).
---Most us haven't seen each other in 35 years.

This is will be my longest post ever. Warning: a lot of pictures, so here goes:

Susan ignored me when she saw a camera pointed at her. Then, she gave me ... this face!

But, Susan gave me a warm beautiful smile immediately after.

I met her my junior year when were were 14 (but, 16 at graduation).

She is a godmother to both my daughters.

We shared platters of these mixed appetizers ... meaty sliders (sirloin & boneless short ribs), garlic shrimp scampi, spicy buffalo wings, tasty cheese quesadillas, seasoned potato skins and fresh mixed veggies. More eating = more waistline!

After our meal, we started our program. Eyes moistened as we listened to letters written to us (specifically for this reunion) from four teachers in Baguio City, Philippines. Then, we watched the movie I presented, to quickly update one another on our current lives.

Bles now lives in Pasig City, Philippines. She had a tarp made, imprinted with our senior class picture. At an earlier reunion in Baguio City on January 2011, each attending classmate signed their own photo.

Bles handcarried this tarp to Las Vegas and each of us signed our own photo, then said something to the group (some recounted high school memories or thoughts about lessons learned from those years).

Below, I signed my photo. I then related how my high school experience taught me about my own ethnicity. Born in America and moving to the Philippines as a young teenager, I acquired a first-hand understanding of being a Filipina and of the importance of connecting with and embracing one's heritage and culture. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

Bles talked to us about the recent class reunion she attended in Baguio City. She also discussed the two students our class is sponsoring through scholarships to Holy Family (now St. Louis School Center). Their entire high school tuition (room, board, tuition for private Catholic education) will be funded by our class. Tearfully, she told us how our classmates in the Philippines miss those of us here in the US and abroad. She encouraged us to stay in contact with one another.

When we first saw one another, we studied each other faces, looking for the young girl we remembered behind the weathered, experience-lined face of the woman in front of us. Then, recognition hits with lots of screams, hugs, and tears.

Bay Area Bridges

There are numerous bridges in the Bay Area of California. I thought I liked bridges, but discovered I like the lines and symmetry of bridges and tunnels.

We stopped in Japantown to shop at Daiso Japan (a $1.50 store in the US and the largest 100-yen chain in Japan). As usual, I started looking looking in other shop windows.

Teddy bought 4 packages of kimchee and spam fried rice. The ground red chili peppers in kimchee turn the entire dish red-orange. Really, it's not as hot or spicy as it looks. I've seen this view of the Golden Gate Bridge on postcards and posters.

I'm glad someone told me it was here so I could see this vantage point.

My brother, Teddy, told me to look at rocks on the beach. So I did.

I like this view. The majesty of this iconic bridge behind the beach. And, my three peeps.

Bi-Rite Creamery, San Francisco

I found Bi-Rite Creamery while reading a photographer's blog about a must-do snack stop. This was one of our highlight treats during our Memorial Day weekend and a definite return trip!

We passed the Bi-Rite Creamery window (they also make baked goods and sell grocery items) and decided to stop at the market first. Their "picnic cakes"which are the size of jumbo muffins. Yum.

Bi-Rite Creamery is part of Bi-Rite Market, a local organic, "good food" SF neighborhood market across from the street from the creamery. Lauren worriedly mentioned someone was looking at us.

As we got closer, we laughed because it was a cardboard man perched in a window "looking" back at us!

In a time when businesses are striving to increase their profits, it was inspiring to see this window sign.

Back to the creamery. While waiting in line, I was looking at these.

It was so hard decide on flavors.

Teddy's banana split! The bananas were hand-caramelized with a small torch. Absolutely delicious!

I shared with Kirk so we chose 5 scoops of 4 flavors: salted caramel, ricanelas (cinnamon with snickerdoodles), brown sugar with ginger caramel swirl and coffee toffee.

I didn't take a picture of Lauren's order. She already started eating and was outside doing this...

Musubi

We planned to be out-and-about in San Francisco, so Lauren made savory musubi (rice balls with toasted seaweed and sesame seeds). These rice balls are also called "onigiri"and make a tasty snack for bento or lunchboxes. These triangle-shaped musubi paired well with barbecued chicken for the picnic stop at Baker Beach. The next day, she made kimchee musubi!

Heart Bokeh Aperture Filter

I made a bokeh filter with paper and cut a heart-shape. Then, I put the filter over my lens and shot these pictures in the yard. The hearts appeared everywhere there was a bright reflection of light. Perhaps, love (like these hearts) is a reflection of the light in us, too.

Senior Prom

Lauren and Spencer went to Prom last weekend. The one-and-only prom for each senior.

She wore a beautiful blue and fushia sequinned dress. As soon as she tried it on, she beamed as she twirled around the room. She was looking forward to this day.

He wore a handsome black tuxedo with shiny patent leather shoes. We went to the tux shop to rematch his tie and vest to her dress. He liked this combination much better ... their outfits now matched.

We took pre-prom pictures at the Japanese Tea Garden. Spencer's Dad gave him a hand with his jacket and carried cold water for us on this toasty, early-summer afternoon.

They both stopped and looked up as geese squawked and flew overhead. A red Japanese maple leaf created a red glow at the top of the frame. Also, the sun was behind them so it created a dreamlike image.

In this image, they were just chatting and being themselves. I was trapped behind a tree ... the leaves were in front of me which created a bit of haze. They didn't think I was photographing so they did "their thing."

I like this shot of Bob taking their picture. He is "papa-razzi" in action. We, as parents, want to capture these special moments (for them and for ourselves) as we see them transition into their adult lives. High school will only be a fond memory in a month from now.

Bob's Spaghetti Sauce

"My Dad's spaghetti sauce is bomb. You need to try it," Spencer said.
(Note: bomb as in excellent, the best, etc).

On Saturday, I found two containers of Bob's spaghetti sauce in the fridge. Spencer dropped them off the night before and I was excited to have the fixings for a great lunch.

Bob's sauce. Tomato sauce, thick with onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, etc.

I found some whole wheat spaghetti in the cupboard.

Started the water boiling for the pasta.

Spaghetti almost al dente.

Lauren tossed a romaine salad with lots of tomatoes.

Then, she grated the last of our Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Lunch is served. Yum.

Spencer, you're right. You're Dad's spaghetti sauce is bomb! Thanks, Bob!

Three fashion show performances over two days. Months of preparation and practice, but a lifetime of memories for these high schoolers.

Scene One: Runway -- Paparazzi at the Premiere.

Auntie Shelly found this black-sequinned dress for Lauren. She also painted and glittered this fan that Alaina donated.

I liked this number, "Introducing the Divas," with the ladies wearing pink dresses. My favorite dress in this scene was the pink ruffled dress in front. Vita, a German exchange student, said she found this dress on a clearance rack at H&M for $12!

Scene Two: Fashion.

Lauren's top and pants were provided by Essentials.

The prom dresses for Lauren and Vivian were provided by Christina's. Lauren fell in love with this dress as soon as she tried it on and was sad to leave it on the rack.

After having makeup and hair done by professionals, the girls still preened in front of the mirror.

Chile Rellenos Casserole

"Ummm. Okay. I've never eaten chile rellenos, but I'll make them. If you really want me to."

Linda needed help preparing food for the softball Fiesta Friday fundraiser. She'd give me the recipe and the ingredients -- it would be an easy side dish, she said. But, over 100 people are expected and I was getting nervous. I wanted to back out. But, I didn't.

Grease was listed but I replaced it with butter (Julia Childs would be proud).

The casseroles laid out (only the first dish had the egg mixture in it).

Last look before going into the oven (well, kind of. As soon as I put it in the oven, I remembered the baking powder. So, I beat two more eggs, added in the baking powder, and did my best to incorporate everything without making a huge mess).

Cool down almost over.

I cut a piece to sample. My first-ever bite of chile rellenos casserole. Yum. Delicious!

I'm saving this recipe. Excuse me, I need to get back to my next three casseroles.

Bullard Composition. Part One.

The Bullard Composition Fashion Show is an annual fundraiser to benefit the ASB (Associated Student Body). Originally, the fashion show showcased formal wear for prom, but now includes casual wear. 17 years later, the show is still entirely produced and run by students (directors, ticket sales, business affairs, choreography, fashion selection, etc) with juniors and seniors as the cast (models) and crew.

This is Lauren's first (and only) year as a Composition participant. The students prepared and practiced for almost three months for three performances over two days (last Friday and Saturday).

Three performances -- I watched two and volunteered one in the girls' dressing room. Parent volunteers helped girls get dressed (lifting a prom dress over b-i-g hair without getting makeup or facial glitter on it isn't easy) as well as keeping track of the loaned clothing/jewelry while trying not to trip on the girls' piles of shoes, clothing, and personal belonging strewn about.

For the female cast members, there was a lot (seriously, a lot) of primping and preening in the dressing room. Planet Hair and Preen Salon provided hairstyles while Paul Mitchell Salon provided make-up. The Band Room was transformed for 24 hours into the girls' dressing room.

After her first Bullard Composition performance (another post for that), I asked Lauren if she wanted to try false eyelashes for the next performance. "YES!" she said.

Auntie Patty to the rescue!

She met us at CVS, showed us what to get (and why) then we followed her home for the application. Eyelashes by Ardell. They're long, natural-looking, and you can see through them. $4.99.

She put on Lauren's eye makeup (with sparkles). No eyelashes yet.

I've never seen pointed-tip cotton swabs before today. She said it's easier to apply and spread the adhesive with these swabs. (Duo eyelash adhesive, clear and waterproof, $6.99).

Start from the outer corner to the inner corner. Then, press, press, press to blot. Otherwise, you'll end up with oozing adhesive which will sting and make the eyes water.

"Uh huhhh. I like it," she replies.

Lauren definitely likes the look. (The three of us ended up in this mirror shot).

Evan & Hannah

Evan's a senior at Bullard High and graduation is just around the corner.
Then, he's off to UCR (University of California, Riverside) and he'll be closer to her.
Last Saturday, we shot some senior pictures to remember these last months of high school.

Evan's girlfriend, Hannah, is a high school junior from Fullerton. They've been dating for two years and she was in town to attend Bullard's Sadie Hawkins Dance. They share a comfortable friendship and visible affection for one another. Sweet!

It was fun to photograph them. They were open and lighthearted ... whee!

Lauren and Spencer went to the Sadie Hawkins Dance at Bullard. The Sadie Hawkins is a tradition in the US where female students invite male students and pay for dance tickets, photos, meals, etc. (opposite of the usual custom of males asking females to school dances).

She had difficulty coming up with an outfit for them to wear, but decided on a sailor theme (sailing around the world, she said).

This year's invitation and theme, A Knight Around the World.

She found these shirts at H&M in Modesto (we stopped there after the softball tournament in Tracy). In the sailor theme, she picked a shirt with a navy blue sequined anchor and a white and navy-striped polo for Spencer. (Do sailors wear sequins?)

She just returned from a Bullard softball tournament with barely time for shower, hair and makeup. No time for pre-dance dinner (Taco Bell later). They stopped for quick shots then headed to the dance. They both said it was fun -- the DJ was awesome so the music was great, they danced a lot and had more fun than the Winter Formal in December!

Passover Seder

The Diaz family invited us for our first-ever Passover Seder dinner. More than a meal and just eating -- the seder is a Jewish ritual that involves prayer, singing, discussion, story-telling, special ritual appetizers, four cups of wine, a full meal, more singing and lots of fun and conversation.
Sadly, Kirk wasn't feeling well so he missed out on this special night with us.

A traditional seder plate is a special plate used to hold certain ritual items of food during a seder.

The special foods are: an egg, charosets, maror (representing bitter herbs; typically, horseradish) and karpas (a green vegetable eaten at seder, such as parsley which is dipped in salt water before eating).

Gifelte fish cakes (minced/chopped fish, blended with matzo, eggs and seasonings then

simmered in stock and shaped into cakes). Delicious.

I like small details. This beaded napkin holder caught my eye.

Alejandra and her parents hosted this Passover Seder. She made this dish of traditional charosets (symbolic dish of apples soaked in red wine and chopped walnuts).

Apples are cut in shapes to represent the bricks made by Hebrew slaves.

Grandmother Helga made this fabulous matzo ball soup. It was so delicious I wanted to ask for a second bowl, but I had to make room for more food that was prepared for this meal. Truly a comfort food. Now I know why matzo ball soup is affectionately known as "Jewish Penicillin" because it will cure any ailment! I think I'm ailing right now...

Lauren and Alejandra. They are friends, high school seniors, and softball teammates. Next year, Alejandra will be attending Boston University and playing soccer. Girls, enjoy these days.

After the Girls Team beat the Boys Team at the CIF Central Section Shoot-out, the announcer helped Lauren surprise her boyfriend, Spencer, with an invitation to the Sadie Hawkins Dance at Bullard High. During halftime at the D-1 Boys Basketball Finals (Clovis East v Buchanan) in Selland Arena, with 9,000 people watching, the announcer called Lauren to center court. Then, he asked if there was a Spencer Adams in the crowd. Dazed, Spencer met them at center court.

Her friends held up a sign, "Sadie's With Lauren?" The crowd started cheering him on!

Spencer smiled and agreed. This will be the first Sadie Hawkins Dance at Bullard for both seniors, so this is memorable start. It will be hard for this young man to top that when he asks her to the Senior Prom!

"Lauren Zenimura from Bullard wants to ask a special question to a special person,"
the announcer said.

"Will Spencer Adams come to center court?" the announced said.

Dazed, Spencer walked to meet Lauren.

He was so embarrassed, but the crowd was cheering for him.

Lauren asked him to turn around as she pointed to the signs behind him.

"Sadie's With Lauren???????" the signs read.

Her friends Kristi, Savannah and Alle held up the signs.

The announcer asked him, "Well, what's your answer?"

He said yes and gave her a hug. The crowd roared! What a fun time!

2010 CIF Central Section (Pre)Shoot-Out

Eight senior athletes were chosen from the Central Section for the 2010 CIF Central Section World Sports Cafe Shoot-out at Selland Arena in Fresno, CA to be held on March 6, 2010.
(The Central Section covers 92 schools in 15 leagues from Divisions 1-6). Vince Wesson, Chairperson of the Central Section Finals, had been following the box scores and selected four boys and four girls "for individual recognition, who had an outstanding year, but whose teams did not make it to the Central Section Finals."

Lauren was selected as one of these senior athletes (the first participant from Bullard since the Shoot-Out began three years ago). Truly an honor for these athletes. Prior to the event this Saturday, the participants gathered for photos, an informational meeting, and to practice two rounds of 3-point shots.

First, a winner is chosen from the girls and from the boys. Then, the winning girl shoots against the winning boy to determine one over-all winner. Last year, the Shoot-out winner was a girl,
Leslie Steele (Buchanan).

These cards have been on my table for a couple weeks. Time to put them away in my special box. From the time Lauren was little, she handmade her cards (cardstock, markers, glue and glitter). Now that she's older, I keep wondering if this is the last handmade card.

Yesterday, Rikkyo University from Tokyo, Japan played an exhibition baseball game against
Fresno Pacific University. In 1927, Grandfather Kenichi Zenimura, brought the
Fresno Athletic Club to play an exhibition game against Rikkyo University. The Fresno Athletic Club sang the Fresno State fight song and the Rikkyo team liked it so much that it added its own name and adopted the song as its own.

This afternoon, Dad (Kenso "Howard" Zenimura) and his teammate, Uncle Fibber (Satoshi Hirayama) were honored at the exhibition game. Both men played baseball for Fresno State and, later, professional baseball for the Hiroshima Carps in Japan.

Rikkyo University is a member of the Tokyo Big-6 Baseball League. The league includes

Hosei University, Keio University, Meiji University, University of Tokyo and Waseda University. The Rikkyo baseball team has won 12 league championships in its history. The team is currently on a US tour playing at UC Irvine, University of Southern California, Fresno Pacific University, Stanford University and the University of San Francisco.

Rikkyo University is a private university that celebrated its 100th year baseball anniversary in November 2009. The baseball team has over 160 players on its roster with 88+ players on its travel team! Rikkyo is a private university that carries a huge roster because it allows volunteer players (although the majority of these players don't receive playing time).

It was a small birthday gathering for Lauren. She chose sushi with a select group of friends.
I couldn't take pictures of food inside Roe as lights were dimmed when dinner started.
Everyone had a fun time at dinner ... we ate sushi for two and a half hours!

I knew about the surprise, so I prepared a breakfast of pancakes, bacon, eggs, potatoes, hot cocoa and orange juice for all of us before heading to school/work. {yawn} Fun start to a birthday although they made me promise --- no pictures! --- because they had Bedhead Hair and no makeup, too.

The summer of 2006, we were having lunch in Hawai'i at a hole-in-the-wall cafe I found on the internet. Ono Hawaiian Foods on Kapahulu Street in Honolulu is a local favorite (non-touristy) that serves authentic, simple Hawaiian dishes in a tiny, disorderly, nondescript eatery. (Ono, in the Hawaiian language, means delicious).

We were eating when I recognized My Guy! I know His Face! (I've been following him since his first Winter Games). He quietly came into the room with four other people and sat down. Their order quickly arrived and they started lunch.

I was leaning out of my seat, sorely straining my neck to get a better view of the US Olympic short track speedskater. Kirk rolled his eyes. He told me it can't be him, not here, and asked me not to bother them while they were eating.

So ... I got up and introduced myself to Apolo Anton Ohno. His handsome face flashed that familiar, bright toothy smile. I knew it! I asked for a couple pictures after he finished eating, but he said, "It's okay. We can do it right now." He's polite and gracious, too! Yay!

As it turns out, Apolo was with the Honolulu Advertiser, so I was interviewed and pictures were taken for the local paper. Apolo was in on his first visit to Hawai'i to receive a Victor Award. The newspaper thought it would be fun heading with a play on words, "Ohno eats lunch at Ono!"

Apolo invited us to the Victor Awards later that day (where we met more athletes).

We're rooting for Apolo. To date, he's currently tied with Bonnie Blair for the most medals (six) won by an American in Winter Games competition. He has three more events in the Winter Games so we're cheering for him to win more medals. Go Apolo! Go USA!

Nicole

I remember when Nicole was born. The baby monitor in her bedroom was on the same frequency as Lauren's so I would hear Nicole and Lauren crying at the same time. The days have passed so quickly and now Nicole's a high school senior at Central High. This weekend, I shot pictures of her before she left with her friend, John, for Central's Winter Formal.

Lauren & Spencer both made the Principal's Honor Roll (3.5 to 4.0 GPA) at Bullard High. When Lauren makes good grades (she had a 3.87), she gets a banana split. This time, she wanted to eat lunch at Wassabi with Spencer. She taught him how to use hashi (chopsticks) today and he fiercely struggled to finish his entire meal with hashi (and a pinkie cramp!)

Spencer's unsure about sushi and sashimi. Think he considered bolting, but Lauren grabbed him.

We ordered box lunches and each came with salad and miso soup.

Wasabi and pickled red ginger for the spicy tuna roll.

"You hold the hashi like this..."

"Yes, that's right."

Ok, he's feeling pretty confident. Time to try with food now.

We all had grilled ahi tuna. Then, Lauren and I had a spicy tuna roll while Spencer had beef teriyaki. Yum.

He did it! Lauren grins when Spencer finally get the beef teriyaki between the hashi!

Heart Surgery

I need heart surgery. I woke up and felt heartache and a deep emotional groaning.
My youngest daughter turns 18 next month. Graduation. College. Boyfriend.

Today is Senior Parents Night at Bullard High.
We're meeting to go over the senior activities (and empty the checkbook). I looked over the senior packet (announcements, cap/gown, grad trips) and I was fine ... yesterday.

I thought I was well-prepared for this phase. Nope. I'm hopelessly sappy.
Truly, I'm happy for her future. But, the sap has taken over today.
When did my naked-screaming-little-baby-wanting-attention grow up?
When did she and I switch positions? Seems she's the one comforting me now, saying
"Awww, things will be alright" while I'm screaming for attention, afraid to be left behind.

I have an appointment with The Ultimate Heart Surgeon.
I'll need to be a compliant patient. Is there a pill for this?

Life is just as it should be.
My girl's living her destiny.
Her mama will get well.

Lauren wanted a poster for for a blank spot on her wall. So, we went downtown to shoot some pictures and brought Spencer along.

Lauren's CART (Center for Advanced Research & Technology) class in Clovis, held their Winter Showcase on 01.14.10. The group project (for Lauren, Gabe Viveros & Isis Wenger) was DNA Ligation. Lauren's cousin, Brandon, was researching CART as a Student Teaching requirement so it was great to have him there, too.

Puppy Love

We stopped by the Diaz house and played with Alina's two-month old puppy, Marley.
Lauren's never had a dog, but thinks she wants one. Spencer was very comfortable
with Marley, but it took Lauren a little time to warm up to the active little puppy.

Bella's Bacon

Bella is my niece, Chanel's, dog. Dogs don't pose for pictures, but I read a photography tip:
if you hold up bacon, a dog will stop and look at it for a moment. It works!

Lani held up a doggie bacon strip and Bella stopped and looked up briefly to snap a shot.

Now that I think about it, if someone held up a piece of bacon to me, I'd stop and look, too!

It's become a tradition to get Chinese Baos from ABC Bakery on Kirk's birthday (New Year's Day). We celebrated in Sacramento at Alex & Lani's. It's great starting the year together. Baos and birthday cake (cupcakes) find a place on the table today! Happy Birthday, Kirk!

Our basketball group made a day trip into San Francisco via BART (Bay Area RapidTransit). It was a fun commute as it was a first-time ride on the BART for many in our group.

West Coast Jamboree (12.28-31.2009)

Lauren's basketball team played in a four-day tournament (three games at Pittsburg High and one game at Antioch High). The team didn't do well in the tournament but it served as a learning experience playing against highly athletic teams from around the country. There were some fun and memorable moments though.

Curb Appeal

Last Sunday, Lauren's friend, Spencer, shot pictures of us for our 2009 Christmas Card. Then, I offered to take pictures of them on the curb in front of our house. I'm not sure why, but I like curbs. I made the mistake of telling him his face looks better in pictures when he doesn't smile. After that, I know he struggled very hard not to smile. Big mistake. Sorry. Everyone looks better with a smile!

Christmas Tree Lane

Kirk, Norman & I walked Christmas Tree Lane. Lauren usually walks with us but chose to walk with her friends tonight. It was a comfortable evening and took us over two hours to walk the 4+ miles from Bullard High to the entrance at Shields then back again). Lots of people and animals dressed in holiday regalia. We enjoyed it all ... the walk, the music, the lights, the people and the cute animals.

This house (near the Shaw exit) draws crowds of people. Lots of lights and flashing displays.

I was happy to see Ryan Yamaoka at a home near the entrance. He's such a talented jazz musician. This trio is known as FYD (letters comprised of each musician's surname initial) and is available for hire. Great music, guys!

Norm's birthday is 12/14, but he chose to celebrate the next day. Panera Bread in Fresno just opened so he chose lunch here. After, we stopped at See's for something sweet and walked around Riverpark before heading back to work. I still need to make him a birthday cake (that's coming) ... Happy Birthday little brother!

Storyboards

In a recent post by Digital Photography School, last week's assignment was about storyboards. They suggested checking out Big Huge Labs for their online product, Mosaic Maker, to make quick web-sized storyboards (you'll need to purchase a pass for a high resolution print).

I thought I'd try the storyboard to highlight a subject or theme on some of my photos. It was easy! Just plug in your shots. This was the "1+3 right with shadow" layout.

Rice Krispies

Lauren frequently requests homemade snacks to share with her teammates. Sometimes it's brownies, or cookies, or caramel popcorn. It's basketball season so she's been asking for Rice Krispies lately. Elizabeth and I went downtown to find some places to shoot pictures. I couldn't find any spots that matched the pictures I've seen, but we had fun anyway. We met at Central Fish to look around and have lunch. Then found the Fresno Arch, a loading dock, and a quiet place by the railroad with a final stop at Starbucks.

We sat at a lunch table facing the now-closed Komoto's Department Store (part of the old Kamikawa Brothers/Asia Hotel building at the corner of G and Kern Streets). When I moved to Fresno, I bought a small rice cooker there from Kaori Komoto (now deceased).

This cute little boy was so friendly. He would smile at us in-between bites of his lunch.

Bullard High School's Winter Formal was held December 5. It was the first Winter Formal for both seniors. Lauren had a basketball tournament that afternoon and they were late, so there was no time for dinner as they rushed to the dance. They stopped for a quick bite at Denny's after the dance.

My brother, Alex, married Lani at The Inn at Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach, CA eight years ago today. She has been a blessing to our family and happy addition. I'm glad I have another sister and hope to celebrate their 50th anniversary!

Redwood Basketball Tournament

Bullard took Third Place in the four-day Redwood Tournament over the weekend. It's a good way to start the season. Immediately after the game, the girls dashed out of the gym to get ready for the Winter Formal that night.

Lauren went for her very first manicure and pedicure Saturday. That night, she was going to Bullard's Winter Formal so she wanted the manicure/pedicure to last, but was worried about scratching them in today's basketball tournament. She wanted a dark color to match the dress (black). I guess I'm not trendy because blackish nails seemed vampire-y to me. Still, she was thrilled and excited to have her nails done!

She was worried about someone seeing and touching her toes.

Winter Formal Wear

She said "yes" then my daughter called me with her happy news.
Tomorrow will be the first Winter Formal for both seniors.

We found the dress and shoes at Macys. The sparkly headband at Nordstrom.
She's happy, giddy and excited. Her joy makes me smile.

At Macy's, we shopped separately, but picked the same dress. Cool.
Simple short black dress with a sequined bodice.

She loves the sequins (and anything else that twinkles).

Apple Hill, Placerville, CA

Thanksgiving was at Alex & Lani's in Sacramento. The next day, Black Friday, we got up early and headed to Apple Hill in Placerville (about 50 miles from Sac). Apple Hill is an area of working farms (apples, berries, grape vineyards, Christmas trees). It was cold and misty when we arrived, but lots of people were out. We like to stop at our two favorite places: Abel's Apple Acres and Boa Vista Farms. We walked, shopped, and ate amidst the smell of fragrant pines and lots of fruit bakeries. Fun day!

Abel's Apple Acres (Apple Hill, Placerville, CA) is one of our favorite stops. Kirk and Lauren always stop to get a caramel apple here. Next time, I'll photograph all the varieties of caramel apples they carry. So delicious and hard to choose just one!

Ron Honda treated Julie & me to lunch today. It was my first visit to Wassabi and it was delicious! I had a box lunch (grilled salmon and ahi with miso soup and salad). I promised to take Lauren there so I'll be back! Thanks for the great lunch, Ron!

Last spring, I made this poster (16x20) to remember our visit. Eight months later, I finally printed it.

After Chinatown, we went to the Ferry Building. It stayed gloomy and overcast with periodic light rain. No worries, still a great time!

The Ferry Building has a long walkway with shops and restaurants on both sides. Ciao Bella is our favorite gelato, the gourmet food shop has a fruit stand in the front, and the little bakery features small beautiful cakes.

Boccalone's sign makes me look twice. Beautiful ceramic sake cups.

The road to Fisherman's Wharf was s-l-o-w-e-d by a bevy of segway travelers and a cable car.

San Francisco. Part One.

Kirk planned two days in San Francisco for my birthday. We stayed in Redwood City the first night (to visit Sunset Gardens). On Day 2, the forecasted storm hit after we reached home in Fresno. Also, it was Fleet Week in SF so the Blue Angels were in town (we saw and heard them overhead). As a sailor's daughter, I enjoyed seeing sailors around town.

A few days after our visit, the Bay Bridge was closed when two steel beams and tie-rods holding a cracked structural support failed. The pictures below show the traffic at the toll booth, driving across sections of the Bay Bridge and a view of Coit Tower from the bridge.

This GPS has been a peacekeeper in our car. It's easier (and safer) to argue (and blame) the GPS than each other!

The wall art (graffiti) on this building was vivid and interesting. You'll see clothing racks because we were walking though a weekend outdoor street market. Also, I shot a picture from the bottom of an apartment.

I caught Lauren and her Pop taking cellphone pictures of each other. Makes me smile.

Seriously, this IS the color of this door. It's neon green against pewter fixtures. Seriously. Neon colors are fashionable this fall, so this door is so IN.

We stopped to eat here (again) at Penang Garden (Malaysian-Thai-Singaporean cuisine). The food was delicious (Rendang Chicken and Belachan Eggplant).

I was caught by surprise. I was looking in the shop window and thought I heard something. A homeless man was snoring on the storefront steps. Times are so hard for many folks.

Sunset Gardens

We subscribe to Sunset Magazine, so Kirk suggested we visit Sunset in Menlo Park before continuing our drive to San Francisco on 10.12.09. We did the Sunset Gardens Walking Tour (representing the western climate zones). I'm so happy we did! A storm was coming and it was gloomy outside, but it was nice to stroll Sunset's grounds. We were the only visitors during our visit ... lucky day! I'm not a good nature photographer, but I still had fun shooting in the garden.

We stopped at Pedrick Produce in Dixon on our way to San Francisco last weekend. We just left brother Alex & Lani's in Sacramento and this is my bro Teddy's favorite produce stand. After buying Asian pears, we shot some Fall pictures with the pumpkins.

Even now, she still picks a big pumpkin. See the headband? She learned to crochet so she could make those. Lots of those.

DMV. Take One.

Some things just have to be done. Going to the DMV is one of them. We had a triple appointment today (Lauren's first driving permit, my license renewal, Kirk's car registration).

California's state furloughs have increased the backlog at the DMV. The average wait (without an appointment) is 2.5 hours. This line doesn't show the crowd of people waiting on the right side and outside the building.

I asked permission to take pictures in a state office. The clerk was puzzled (no one asks to take pictures in the DMV, but she agreed because Lauren was applying for her first permit).

3) Kirk couldn't register Lauren's car. (Forgot proof of insurance).

Crochet Lessons

Lauren learned to crochet last month (Isis taught her in Starbucks). She started to have technique challenges (going cross-eyed) so I enlisted help. I don't crochet and Loretta graciously volunteered.

First, Loretta watched the newbie crocheter.

Then, she demonstrated proper technique.

Loretta crocheted some herself while chatting with Lauren.

Lauren's a shooting guard and a senior this year. This is her final pre-season AAU Tournament. It's sad for all the seniors (and their parents). The Bullard Girls High School Varsity basketball season starts in December and that will end in February. It's said, "Every end is a new beginning," ... and, so we start with a new end.

Branden's First Birthday Party was last Sunday (10.11.09). I haven't seen this little one since he was born and a year has quickly passed. To make up for lost time, all these pictures were shot within one hour because he and his Mom Chanel were leaving to get ready for his big party. He's the apple of his Ama Lani's eye and Apa Alex (my brother) can't wait for him to come over and play.

I think he's going to be a musician. Look at his happy expression as he strums this guitar.

Ama Lani pulls him away from the guitars, but he crawls right back to them.

As soon as the front door opened, he squealed and ran out the door. He's too fast for me!

I was laying on my back on the floor and had Branden propped on my legs (he's holding on to my flannel pajamas on the left). He has such an expressive face.

He really loves this car. He was laughing, talking, and squealing down the sidewalk.

A Birthday

Some girlfriends (Vicky, Julie & Shari) dragged me lunch to celebrate a birthday. I DID NOT want to, but I'm glad we went yesterday (it's not THE day). We had breakfast enchiladas for lunch at The Patio Cafe in Fig Garden Village.

Gordon Barker's Celebration of Life service was yesterday. He passed after an extended confinement at UC San Francisco Med Center. He's pictured below during a Father's Day Tournament (top row, far right) on the bleachers at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa last summer. He cheered with us, supporting the Bullard Knights Girls Basketball team.

Mr. Gordon, the bleachers just won't be the same without you.
